Meritorious Service Star – 2020

Here is another opportunity to nominate an adult leader who you believe deserves to be recognized for outstanding service to scouting inside our Sonoran Sunset District.

May we present the Meritorious Service Star – 5 yr.

The Meritorious Service Star, created in 2016 by the Grand Canyon Council, is a council award presented in the same manner that Silver Beaver is a national award presented by councils. The award is available to Scouters who render service of an outstanding nature at the council, district or unit level over a period of least five years. It usually precedes the Silver Beaver and follows the District Award of Merit. The award is made available annually based on 1 for each 40 traditional units or fraction thereof. The council need not present all the awards to which it is entitled each year.

The qualifications to receive consideration for this award are as follows:

1. a nominee must be a currently registered scouter in a volunteer position
2. a nominee must have rendered noteworthy service to youth within scouting, outside scouting, or both. Notice that this noteworthy service may have been one single plan or decision that contributed to the lives of a large number of youth, or it may have been given to a small group over an extended period of time
3. consideration must be given to the nominee’s scouting position and the corresponding opportunity to render outstanding service beyond the expectations of their position. Ask yourself, Did the scouter go above and beyond? Then they deserve the nomination
4. the nominee’s attitude towards cooperation with the district and or council is to be taken into consideration. This is not for a scouter who goes rogue!
5. nominations cannot be considered for posthumous awards. The scouter must be breathing…

The difference between this award and the District Award of Merit is that usually the nominee has already received the District Award of Merit and has continued in outstanding and noteworthy service for at least 5 years.

So, if you know these leaders, please consider a nomination for them, let’s go out and nominate those that have been on the outstanding leader trail for more than 5 years!
